EPA, DOT Release Phase 2 Gas Emissions Regs for Heavy Duty Trucks

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) revealed the final Phase 2 greenhouse gas rules for heavy-duty trucks and engines last month.

The 1,650-page final rule was created in an effort to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel-consumption from medium and heavy-duty vehicles and engines. The new rule focuses on four specific standards for each type of heavy-duty vehicle:

  1. combination tractors
  2. trailers used in combination with those tractors
  3. heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans
  4. vocational vehicles

The rule also outlines separate standards for engines that power combination tractors and vocational trucks, as well as natural gas engines.
